B.C. Employment Standards Quiz


The following is a quiz prepared by Open School BC. The wording is slightly modified from the original, but it is included here as it was developed by experts in teaching and instructional design.

This activity will help students to learn their legal rights as an employee and to be able to recognize them in different situations.


Using the information on the Employment Standards website determine whether an employer is following the Act in the examples.

Answer “Yes” or “No”:

  • Tom started work at a bakery at 6:30 p.m. He did not get a break until 12:00 a.m. Is this a violation?
  • Meghan works delivering flowers. She showed up for work at 4:00 p.m. but was sent home at 4:30 p.m. because business was slow. She was paid for 30 minutes. Was Meghan paid correctly?
  • Nick missed two days of work because he was sick. He didn’t get paid for his six-hour shifts. Should he have been paid?
  • Gabby was fired two months after she started working for a clothing company. She felt that she was doing a good job, but did not receive any compensation or severance from the employer. Was she owed compensation?
  • Karen is paid minimum wage of $8 per hour at the coffee shop where she works. On Saturday, she worked from 6 a.m. until 4 p.m. She has an unpaid half hour to eat her lunch from 11 to 11:30 and was paid $60 for the day. Was this a correct payment?
  • Chris has been working at her job for a year and is looking forward to a little extra cash when she receives her vacation pay. She is disappointed to learn that she has only received two percent of last year’s pay. Was this the minimum standard allowed under the Act?
  • Tammy is a very responsible twelve-year-old and she wants a job for the summer. Her dad believes that she is too young to legally work, but her mom thinks that she can get a special permit. Is her mom right?
  • Frank works as a cashier. When his register is short, his boss deducts it from his paycheque every two weeks. Is his boss correct to do this?
  • Tina never knows how much money she makes from week to week as the money is just deposited into her bank account whenever her boss gets around to it. Is she receiving her pay appropriately?
  • Fiona is working on Victoria Day and will get paid for her regular eight-hour shift. Is she being paid correctly?
  • Jeremy was told he would be paid $6 per hour at his new job at a drug store because his 500 hours experience was gained in a sporting goods store, not at a drug store. Is this correct?
